Matías Avaca is an Argentinian improviser, director, teacher and producer based in Aotearoa New Zealand. His artistic practice explores the intersection of language, identity and unscripted theatre, often using multilingual performance, non-verbal communication and visually driven staging to create work that connects across cultures.
He has taught, performed and directed in more than 15 countries across Latin America, Europe, Asia and Oceania. His original formats include Comedy World League, Hotel Sol, Bonfire and La Catrina, with his work presented by festivals, theatres and improv ensembles internationally.
Matías is the co-founder and co-director of Laenye Productions, which creates opportunities for Spanish-speaking artists and promotes Latin American arts and culture in Aotearoa. He is also the co-founder and artistic director of Mabel Impro, the first Spanish-speaking improv group in Australasia; co-founder and former director of the Auckland Improv Festival; and founder of the Auckland Improv Marathon.
As a teacher and artistic collaborator, Matías works with performers and ensembles on multilingual improv, magical realism, physical storytelling, character work, ensemble practice, and the development of original show formats. Throughout his performance, teaching and producing work, he is interested in creating stages where different languages, cultural perspectives and ways of communicating can coexist.
